{"id":5134,"date":"2019-11-15T12:02:44","date_gmt":"2019-11-15T12:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/formadrain-com.k0bdwxs7-liquidwebsites.com\/?p=5134"},"modified":"2021-10-29T15:42:14","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T15:42:14","slug":"empipe-lining-solutions-to-the-rescue-at-the-palace-of-purification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formadrain.com\/en\/empipe-lining-solutions-to-the-rescue-at-the-palace-of-purification\/","title":{"rendered":"Empipe Lining Solutions to the Rescue at the Palace of Purification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5135 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/formadrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RC-Harris-Water-Treatment-Plant-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"RC Harris water treatment plant in Toronto\" width=\"431\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/formadrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RC-Harris-Water-Treatment-Plant-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/formadrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RC-Harris-Water-Treatment-Plant-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/formadrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RC-Harris-Water-Treatment-Plant.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/>The RC Harris Water Treatment Plant, located on Queen Street East in Toronto, Ontario, cleans, disinfects and converts Lake Ontario water into potable water for the City of Toronto\u2019s distribution system.\u00a0 Operating 365 days a year, it handles roughly 460 million litres of water every day, amounting to some 45% of the water supply for Toronto and York Region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction began in 1932 and the facility was commissioned in November 1941.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is no ordinary water treatment plant.\u00a0 The facility, sometimes referred to as the \u201cPalace of Purification\u201d, was named for Rowland Caldwell Harris, Commissioner of Works from 1912 to 1945. \u00a0 Mr. Harris was renowned for his sense of the aesthetic and had his architect, Thomas Canfield Pomphrey, design a masterpiece in brick, limestone and copper in the art deco style.\u00a0 Michael Ondaatje writes, \u201cHe modeled its entrance on a Byzantine city gate, and the inside of the building would be an image of the ideal city\u201d with its marble floors and rounded arches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering named the RC Harris Water Treatment Plant a historic civil engineering site in 1992, and in June 1998 it was designated a Heritage Property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, when several of the stacks were leaking, breaking open walls or disturbing any of the infrastructure to repair them was entirely out of the question.\u00a0 The problem was how to line these vertical stacks with a structural product. The solution was the Formadrain system of repair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Formadrain licensee, Empipe Lining Solutions, had a number of obstacles that they overcame with great success.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the ground does not support the pipe, lining a vertical stack is a precision procedure.\u00a0 The installation was done through a cleanout, something many other systems do not have the capability of.\u00a0 The cleanouts were located in the building attic, well above street level.
