{"id":9745,"date":"2020-07-17T11:37:49","date_gmt":"2020-07-17T11:37:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/formadrain-com.k0bdwxs7-liquidwebsites.com\/?p=9745"},"modified":"2021-10-29T15:39:57","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T15:39:57","slug":"problems-with-laterals-and-how-to-solve-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formadrain.com\/en\/problems-with-laterals-and-how-to-solve-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Problems with Laterals and How to Solve Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9747 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/formadrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Problems-with-Laterals-and-How-to-Solve-Them-300x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"972\" height=\"324\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Society of Civil Engineers in their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructurereportcard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Wastewater-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 Infrastructure Report Card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are over 800,000 miles of public sewers and 500,000 miles of private laterals in the U.S. The report notes that \u201ceach of these conveyance systems is susceptible to structural failure, blockages, and overflows\u201d, and that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/npdes\/sanitary-sewer-overflows-ssos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates that between 23,000 and 75,000 overflow events occur each year, not including sewage backups into buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laterals in older homes were commonly made of metals which, while strong, are susceptible to corrosion, breakage, and clogging from water-seeking tree and shrub roots. Clogged and broken laterals need immediate attention. Not only does a clogged lateral affect the homeowner, it can also have a negative impact on the municipal wastewater systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open-cut trenching to replace the lateral with a new pipe is an option, but one that some homeowners are reluctant to undertake because of the unavoidable disruption to their lawn, landscaping, and pavement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A no-dig CIPP lining solution is an attractive alternative for many homeowners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their \u201cOverview of Lateral and Main\/Lateral Connection Lining and Sealing Technologies\u201d, NASSCO identifies some challenges in lining laterals including multiple bends, diameter changes, and offset joints. A retaining jacket is put on the outside of the liner to prevent overgrowth into the missing section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Curing<\/strong>: Cure quality is essential to the strength and durability of the liner. FORMADRAIN liners are steam cured, allowing for a controlled and complete cure every time, regardless of ambient temperatures.
